NEWS-RECORD ENDORSES PURE PROGRESS CANDIDATES!
Elect Newman
Election time is upon South Orange, and change is in the air. In addition
to three four-year terms and one two-year term on the Board of Trustees,
the presidency also will be up for grabs. While the incumbent has accomplished
much in his lengthy tenure, we feel the challenger, Douglas Newman, brings
much to the table and South Orange would do well to elect him president.
Newman, a resident of South Orange for 17 years, has a history of civic
involvement with the community. He has served as the founding member
of the 2006 consolidation and shared-services study referendum and as
chairman of Main Street South Orange's Economic Development Committee.
As chairman of the Downtown Management Corporation Committee, he helped
orchestrate the formation of the Downtown Management and Redevelopment
Corp.
This involvement allows Newman to have the insight needed for disciplined
financial management, something of which our heavily taxed homeowners
are in dire need. We need someone to stop our fiscal hemorrhaging while
maintaining the quality of life residents of the village of South Orange
have come to expect. Newman is the right candidate to make the revitalization
of downtown actually happen.
Elect Goldberg
…Michael Goldberg is the perfect candidate for the position.
An active community watchdog, Goldberg successfully fought to reduce the
density of quarry development as a founding member of the Coalition to
Preserve South Orange. As a founding member of the Villagers for a Better
South Orange, he helped defeat a referendum last year that would have more
than doubled the open space tax. Goldberg also has strong business acumen
heightened by a master's degree in business administration and five
years worth of consulting on enterprise software implementations for Fortune
1,000 companies. Such expertise can only benefit South Orange.
Elect… Levison and Rosner
Our Board of Trustees is the body that directs the village of South Orange
through difficult straits toward a better future. For that purpose, we
need a group of individuals who possess both experience and a willingness
to try new approaches when current ways don't yield the desired
results.… [H]oward Levison and Mark Rosner have what it takes to
succeed and should be elected to four year terms on Tuesday.
[…]
Levison may not have any experience as a trustee, but his wealth of knowledge
and involvement in village activities more than makes up for that. A longtime
resident of South Orange, he founded Main Street South Orange, was acting
chairman of the Rent Leveling Board, co-chairman of the Energy Policy Committee
and is now part of the Joint Study Commission exploring shared services
with Maplewood to reduce municipal expenses. Levison will also bring an
enthusiasm to the Board of Trustees that has been missing for some time
and will make an excellent addition to the board.
Rosner, a 21-year resident of South Orange, was appointed to the Board
of Trustees in 1998 and re-elected in 1999 and 2003. Rosner brings a wealth
of knowledge and experience regarding the running of our village. Currently
chairman of the Legal, Health, Welfare and Personnel Committee, Rosner
is also a member of the Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee and the
Planning and Zoning Committee, as well as several other groups and organizations.
However, he is willing to explore new concepts and ideas in savings and
distribution of finance that differ from older, staid manners. Rosner will
round out a board ready to adapt and face new challenges without forgetting
the lessons of the past.
He should be re-elected to the Board of Trustees.
